(Don’t Be Afraid To Fail)
As a business coach, consultant, and business owner, the number one challenge I see in people is lack of initiative. Wanting and doing are two entirely different things. Sure, we all want to have a six pack, or drive an exotic car, but none of us ever really do anything to bring that desire to fruition. As the old saying goes, talk is cheap. Life is all about action, the rest is just fluff. You hear it all the time and read it in articles and books. The average successful individual fails far more than anyone else. Think about that for moment. See we never equate success to failure, but in reality, the opposite is true. The reason for this is that you must try. Most of us never even try. The ones that do, well you guessed it, we often fail. Failure is part of the process. It is inevitable and cannot be circumvented. Along with trying and failing though, comes trying and succeeding.
Business coaching is all about getting your client to their desired results as quickly and efficiently as possible. I often tell my clients to just start somewhere. Getting going is far more effective than not starting at all. I am all for a well thought out plan, but a plan without action is just a plan. I’d rather see my client pushing at me to get the ball rolling, then to be sitting back trying to plan for every little detail but never executing. Some of the best advice I have ever received was from my own personal business coach. I was scared about having enough knowledge to truly start my business. His response was priceless, and sticks with me in every endeavor I take on. He said, “earn while you learn”. This statement embodies the “Start Now” attitude. You see, nothing will ever be perfect, and when starting a business, I promise you it will wind up completely different than you thought and the changes along the way will be more than you expected. You may even wind up doing something entirely different in the end. The bottom line though is that you are doing something. Life is all about execution. Being stagnant gets us nowhere. We must step out into the zone of discomfort and go for what we want.
Structure is the key to getting your goals met in a timely manner. Repetitive consistent scheduling of tasks allows this to happen. I encourage my clients to do this in all aspects of their lives. Even the smallest things, like feeding the dog or the baby, when they take the trash out, how much time they spend at the gym, etc. etc. etc. Without structure we will naturally waste time doing mindless, meaningless things. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for mindless and meaningless things, everything in life has its place, just make sure you schedule it into your routine.
What helped me most by hiring a business coach honestly had nothing to do with business itself. Of course, he pointed me in the right direction and aligned me with the right people, lawyers, designers, SEO experts, etc., but what helped the most was his ability to instill confidence in me, and that produced action. When someone has already been where you are, they are comfortable, where as you are very uncomfortable having never been there before. They can see exactly what you are doing, what you are thinking, and they know what you can achieve because they have already achieved it. Maybe it isn’t in your exact field, but they know what you are going through. They can help you navigate the space, build your belief in yourself, remove your self-limiting beliefs, and most importantly, get you to execute. That support is crucial to your success and will get you started on your task immediately. It’s almost as though they believe in you more than you believe in yourself. That boost of confidence makes you feel like you can conquer the world. Which is exactly what you need when getting started on any goal!
